Lesson Program Basics

Every student begins with a private lesson so that we can evaluate the rider and place the rider at the appropriate level and with the appropriate horse. For a beginner, it usually takes about 10 private lessons before the rider is ready for group instruction. Every rider progresses at a different speed. Very young riders may need more private lessons before riding in a group. Experienced riders usually combine private lessons with a group lesson.

Recommended riding apparel

Safety helmets are required for all riders. We recommend Troxel brand helmets and they can be purchased at any local tack shops. Riders must wear long pants and closed shoes or boots
with a slight heel.

Coggin Creek Stables welcomes any person to our facility that has the desire to learn how to ride or to improve upon riding, horsemanship, or showmanship skills. You do not need to own a horse to take lessons with us.

From the beginner to the advanced rider, we offer thorough, safety conscious instruction in Western, Hunt Seat, Saddleseat, Equitation, and Pleasure. Beginning students learn about horse basics -- grooming, tack, safety and beginning riding. Advanced riders will learn techniques to advance their riding. From beginner flat work to the exhilaration of jumping, riders are continuously challenged and rewarded after each learning experience.

Your riding lesson includes grooming and tacking up your horse, and putting the horse away after the lesson. We help you with the horse care and you are welcome to take extra time grooming your horse after the lesson if you like
